Peter A. Coclanis has been Director of the Global Research Institute since its establishment in 2010. He is also the Albert R. Newsome Distinguished Professor of History at UNC-Chapel Hill. He is a native of Chicago, took his Ph.D. at Columbia University in 1984, and joined the faculty at UNC that same year. He is an economic historian who works mainly in the areas of U.S. economic history, Southeast Asian economic history, and global economic history. He has published widely in these areas. In addition, he publishes frequently in newspapers and magazines. He has taught at Columbia, Harvard, and the National University of Singapore in addition to UNC-Chapel Hill. Terry Tamari is the Coordinator of the Global Research Institute, offering support to both the director and research fellows, as well as managing the day-to-day activities of the GRI.
