Poverty in North Carolina since 2000: Structural and Cyclical Components
The incidence of poverty, as measured by the percentage of individuals with incomes below the national poverty threshold, was declining in North Carolina in the years 1959 through 2000. The trend, observed through the second half of the 20th Century, has been reversed since 2000 – the poverty rate returned in 2010 to a rate last observed in 1980.
